- Roof is less than 10 years old — You’re in great shape. Install with confidence.
- Roof is 10–15 years old — Have it inspected. If it’s in good condition, you can likely proceed.
- Roof is 15+ years old — Consider replacing the roof first. Many solar installers can coordinate both projects.

Roof Direction and Angle
In Florida, south-facing roofs get the most direct sunlight throughout the day and produce the highest energy output. But that doesn’t mean other orientations won’t work:
- South-facing — Ideal. Maximum sun exposure year-round.
- Southwest or southeast-facing — Excellent. Only a small reduction in production.
- West-facing — Good. Produces strong afternoon output, which aligns with peak energy usage.
- East-facing — Decent. More morning production, less in the afternoon.
- North-facing — Not ideal for solar in most cases.
Roof pitch also matters. Florida homes with a moderate slope (15–30 degrees) tend to perform best, but flat roofs work well too — panels can be mounted on tilted racking systems to optimize the angle.
Shade and Obstructions
Solar panels need direct sunlight to perform at their best. If large trees, neighboring buildings, or other structures cast shadows on your roof for significant portions of the day, it can reduce your system’s output.
Things to look for:
- Large trees directly south or west of your home
- Tall neighboring structures that block afternoon sun
- Roof features like dormers, vents, or chimneys that create shade pockets
The good news is that modern solar technology handles partial shade much better than older systems. Microinverters and power optimizers allow each panel to operate independently, so one shaded panel doesn’t drag down the rest.
